Independently arrived at the theory of natural selection. Wallace's letter to Darwin in 1858 prompted Darwin to finally publish On the Origin of Species โ arguably the most important book in the history of science.
The numerological dynamic
Darwin had developed the theory over 20 years but held back publication; Wallace independently derived the same theory from the field in just two years. Rather than competing, they presented jointly. Wallace always credited Darwin as the primary discoverer.
One of history's great examples of scientific generosity: two men arriving at the same idea and choosing to share credit rather than fight over it.
