The eight phases of the moon

The moon runs the oldest calendar we have, and it moves through eight recognisable phases roughly every 29.5 days โ€” from the dark of the new moon to the full and back again. Each phase has long been associated with a different kind of work: beginnings, effort, culmination, release.

You can read the phases two ways. As a cycle, they tell you what the current moon is good for. As a birth phase, the moon you were born under is said to describe your natural rhythm โ€” whether you are someone who starts things, drives them, completes them, or lets them go.

Explore each one

New Moon
The dark โ€” intention, seeding, the unseen start
Waxing Crescent
First light โ€” fragile momentum, the choice to continue
First Quarter
The push โ€” resistance arrives and must be met
Waxing Gibbous
The refining โ€” adjust, edit, keep going
Full Moon
The reveal โ€” culmination, clarity, and everything felt at once
Waning Gibbous
The sharing โ€” gratitude, teaching, giving it away
Last Quarter
The release โ€” what has to be let go of
Waning Crescent
The rest โ€” surrender, emptiness, the pause before the next

Working with the phases

For the cycle, simply follow the moon: seed at the new, push at the first quarter, harvest at the full, release at the last quarter. For your birth phase, look up the moon on the day you were born. Both pair naturally with your Personal Month, which runs on a similar rhythm.
