The Soul Urge number

Your Soul Urge number — also called the Heart’s Desire — is the innermost layer of your name chart: what you most deeply want, the motive humming beneath everything you do. It is drawn from the vowels of your full birth name, the softest and most private sounds, and it answers a single question — what does your soul actually crave?

Where the Personality number (the consonants) is the shell strangers meet, the Soul Urge is the room behind the door — and the Destiny number (every letter) is the life those inner and outer selves build together. The three make up the numerology of your name.

How to calculate your Soul Urge number

Add the Pythagorean values of only the vowels in your full birth name, then reduce to a single digit — unless the running total lands on the master numbers 11 or 22, which are kept as they are. The consonants are set aside; they belong to the Personality number.

Vowel values: A=1, E=5, I=9, O=6, U=3 (and Y when it acts as a vowel, as in “Lynn”).

Common questions

Is the Soul Urge number the same as the Heart’s Desire number?

Yes. They are two names for one calculation — the sum of the vowels in your full birth name, reduced to a single digit unless it lands on 11 or 22. Some writers prefer "Heart’s Desire" because it says plainly what the number describes; others keep the older term "Soul Urge". Either way the method and the meaning are identical.

Does Y count as a vowel in the Soul Urge?

It depends on the job the letter is doing in that name. Y is counted as a vowel when it carries the vowel sound and no other vowel is present in the syllable — as in Lynn, Bryn or Yvonne. It is treated as a consonant when it glides into a following vowel, as in Yolanda. Where the reading is genuinely ambiguous, most practitioners calculate the name both ways and see which result they recognise.

What happens when the Soul Urge and the Life Path conflict?

That is normal rather than a fault in the chart. The Life Path describes the road you are walking; the Soul Urge describes what you want while you walk it. A Life Path 8 with a Soul Urge 7 will build the career and quietly resent every meeting that keeps them from thinking. The tension is usually the most useful thing a chart tells you, because it names the trade-off you keep making without noticing.
