Compound Numbers

A compound number is any double-digit total produced along the way to a single digit: the 25 that becomes 7, the 19 that becomes 1, the 16 that becomes 7. Pythagorean numerology largely passes over these, treating them as arithmetic on the way to the answer. Chaldean numerology takes the opposite view, and this is the deepest disagreement between the two systems.

For the Chaldean tradition, the compound number is where the actual information lives. A 7 arrived at via 25 is held to be a completely different animal from a 7 arrived at via 16 — the first carrying analysis and hard-won discernment, the second carrying the karmic weight that 16 has always been assigned. Reducing both to 7 and calling them the same thing looks, from this angle, like throwing away the evidence and keeping the summary.

Western numerology does preserve compounds in one place, which suggests the argument is not entirely lost: the karmic debt numbers. 13, 14, 16 and 19 are read as compounds precisely because their double-digit form is considered to carry a meaning that survives reduction. A Life Path 4 that arrived via 13 is read differently from one that arrived via 22 or 31. In practice, most careful readings note the compound even when the tradition does not formally require it.

How to calculate

The compound number is the double-digit total reached before the final reduction. Example: a name summing to 47 reduces to 2 — the root is 2, and 47 is the compound behind it. Chaldean readings interpret both.
