Transits

Transits are numerology's slowest-moving and least-known timing device, and the mechanism is unusual enough to be worth stating plainly: your name is spelled out across your lifetime, one letter at a time, and each letter stays in force for a number of years equal to its value. A B (2) governs two years. An M (4) governs four. An S (1) governs a single year and is gone.

Three transits run simultaneously — one from the first name (the physical transit), one from the middle name (the mental), and one from the last name (the spiritual). Each cycles independently, and when a letter's allotted years are exhausted, the next letter of that name takes over. When a name is exhausted, it starts again from the beginning. The result is a three-layer pattern that repeats on a long, irregular cycle, and it is the reason two people with the same Life Path can have completely different years.

The letters themselves carry meaning beyond their number. A transit through a vowel is held to be more emotionally exposed than one through a consonant. Long letters — the 8s and 9s — describe extended, slow-moving periods; a run of short letters describes years that feel choppy and unsettled. Transits are chiefly used as the raw material for the Essence Number, which sums them.

How to calculate

Write out your first, middle and last names. Each letter governs a number of years equal to its Pythagorean value, running consecutively from birth. Track all three names in parallel — the letter currently in force in each is your transit for that year.
