First Vowel

The first vowel in your first name โ€” a glimpse of the private self, the reaction that occurs before you decide how to present it.

Vowels in numerology belong to the interior. They are the letters you cannot form without opening the mouth and letting sound out unobstructed, and the tradition treats them as the parts of a name that carry the soul rather than the surface. The First Vowel of the first name is therefore read as the most immediate and least edited part of a person: the instinctive reaction, arriving before judgement, before manners, before strategy.

Each vowel carries a distinct interior temperature. A (1) reacts with self-assertion and a fast, independent instinct. E (5) reacts with curiosity and a hunger for movement and information. I (9) reacts with feeling โ€” it is the most emotionally exposed of the vowels, quick to sympathy and to hurt. O (6) reacts with caution and a protective instinct, weighing consequences before anything else. U (3) reacts with openness and an odd, characteristic luck. Y, when it acts as a vowel, reacts with hesitation and a reflex toward the unseen.

The First Vowel is a fragment rather than a full reading โ€” it is not a substitute for the Soul Urge, which sums every vowel in the name. What it offers is speed: it describes the first half-second, and people are often more accurately identified by their first half-second than by anything they subsequently do about it.

How to calculate

Find the first vowel in your first name and take its Pythagorean value: A=1, E=5, I=9, O=6, U=3. Treat Y as a vowel only when it carries the vowel sound, as in Lynn.
